On December 21, 2018, Professor Xu Qi, Executive Chairman of Confucius Academy Academic Board and President of Guizhou Association of Philosophy, at the invitation of Chinese culture research team from Sichuan Institute for Advanced Study of Education and Culture of Sichuan Normal University, participated in the program of lecture series on Chinese culture, and delivered a wonderful lecture on the Modern Transformation of Traditional Chinese Culture to students and teachers at the lecture hall of Lion Rock Campus.

Professor Xu Qi elaborated on ancient and modern problems, Chinese and western problems, inherited and innovative problems, and modern transformation problems faced by traditional Chinese culture from perspectives of the definition of Chinese culture, the strategic position of culture of the Party and the country, cultural dilemma, as well as the way for the cultural development.

He pointed out that in the concept of excellent traditional Chinese culture; “excellent” is a crucial parameter. It is not appropriate to inherit traditional culture regardless of its nature. The traditional Chinese culture to be inherited and promoted must be excellent, essential, dynamic, and future-oriented. It should also be derived from the past and built on the current achievements. Two quotations from General Secretary Xi Jinping are especially important: we must promote the creative transformation and innovative development of excellent traditional Chinese culture, which is emphasized in the report at the 19th National Congress of CPC; and we should cherish our cultural roots, draw on other cultures, and be forward-thinking. They define our basic attitude towards traditional culture.

The eloquent lecture delivered by Professor Xu Qi inspired and enlightened students and teachers present. After it, Professor Xu Qi engaged students and teachers in interactive dialogues.
